Bigpond password prompts in Microsoft Outlook

Account type

·         Set account type as SMTP.

Incoming server details

·         Set incoming server address as smtp.telstra.com

·         Set incoming server port as 993.

·         Set encrypted connection as SSL.

Outgoing server details:

·         Set outgoing server address as mail.telstra.com

·         Set outgoing server port as 465 as recommended or else 587.

·         Set SMTP authentication as on.

·         Set encrypted connection as SSL/TLS on port 464 as recommended, or else STARTTLS on the port as 587.

Username and password

·         Enter your Telstra email address that ends with @bigpond.com or @bigpond.net.au, or @telsra.com.

·         Enter your Telstra password.

Other settings to check for

·         Tick mark the checkbox that says Outgoing server requires authentication.

For the solution

Username in Microsoft outlook should have a domain name that is appended as username must be in form like username@bigpond.com don’t write username. This may have been left behind from the initial configuration, which was years back when it was not even required.

·         Tick mark on the checkbox with Use same settings as an incoming server option. It requires an encrypted connection.

·         If using SMTP as mail.bigpond.com, then the type must be SSL, and the port should be 465 or 587.

·         IF using SMTP as smtp.telstra.com, then type must be SSL, and port must be 465 only.
